Glimpse of a lost industry

Description

A broken counterweight hangs from the Dunston staiths and disappears into the river Tyne, providing only a glimpse of the major industrial activity that is now long gone - loading coal onto ships. The staiths is now a Scheduled Monument, Grade II listed, thought to be the largest timber structure in Europe.
